AbleSign alternative
with live content on every screen

AbleSign is a free digital signage platform with no per-screen fees, reliable playback and players for Android, Amazon, BrightSign and LG webOS Signage. On price, it is hard to beat. People who look for an AbleSign alternative usually want more on the screen than their own files: live data, designed slides or a Raspberry Pi as the player. TVpilot imports your AbleSign library automatically. Here is an honest comparison.

Free plan, no credit card required. Paid plans from €5 a month.

The short answer

AbleSign is free, with no per-screen fees and no paid plans listed on its site. It runs on Android 7 or newer, the Amazon Signage Stick and Fire TV Sticks, BrightSign, LG webOS Signage, Sony Pro displays and any browser, with synchronised playback, scheduling, transitions and proof of play. TVpilot is free for 1 screen and costs €5 a month for 3 screens, so on price alone AbleSign wins. TVpilot adds live plugins, a Designer, AI Studio, a Raspberry Pi player with HDMI-CEC TV scheduling and an emergency alert, and moves your AbleSign playlists over automatically.

What really differs

Price: free against a small plan

AbleSign is free and says so plainly: no per-screen fees, whether you run 1 screen or 1,000. Its site lists no paid plans. If you only need your own images and videos on a few screens, that is a strong offer and TVpilot cannot beat it on price.

TVpilot is free for 1 screen, forever. From there, Starter is €5 a month with 3 screens included and €2 per extra screen, so 10 screens cost €19 a month; Pro is €29 a month with 10 screens and every Premium feature. What that buys is in the next sections.

Players

AbleSign runs on Android 7 or newer, the Amazon Signage Stick and Fire TV Sticks with Fire OS 6 or newer (Vega OS sticks are not compatible), BrightSign players, LG webOS Signage displays, Sony Pro displays and any device with a browser. Playback keeps going when the connection drops, and several screens can play in sync.

TVpilot runs on the Amazon Signage Stick, any Raspberry Pi with one install command, a Fire TV Stick with the TVpilot app, Android TV and Chromecast with Google TV through a browser, and any smart TV or computer that opens a player URL. On a Raspberry Pi it switches the TV on and off on a schedule through HDMI-CEC and restarts itself within about 10 seconds after a crash. It has no native BrightSign or webOS app.

What goes on the screen

AbleSign plays your media in playlists with start and end dates, durations, daily schedules and animated transitions, organised in workspaces with role-based team access, and gives verified proof-of-play reports.

TVpilot adds content you do not have to make yourself: a Designer with widget boxes, AI Studio for generated promos and menus, and live plugins for weather, news, Google and Trustpilot reviews, calendars, a meeting room panel, Power BI, Shopify, bol.com, Mollie and SumUp dashboards, NS departures, ANWB traffic and a queue display. Premium adds smart triggers that play a slide only while a rule holds, and an emergency alert that puts one message on every screen within seconds.

Honest advice

Which one should you pick?

Choose AbleSign if

  • You only need your own images and videos on screen and want to pay nothing.
  • You run many screens and want no per-screen fee at all.
  • You use BrightSign players, LG webOS Signage or Sony Pro displays.
  • You want synchronised playback across screens on those players.

Choose TVpilot if

  • You want live data on screen: reviews, weather, shop sales, departures or calendars.
  • You want to design slides in the dashboard or have AI Studio make them.
  • You want to use a Raspberry Pi with HDMI-CEC TV power scheduling.
  • You want an emergency alert, smart triggers or approvals before publishing.

Moving from AbleSign to TVpilot

AbleSign has an automatic import. The Switch to TVpilot plugin copies your photos and videos as original files and builds a playlist for every screen group and every screen outside a group, with the same order and durations, because AbleSign has no separate playlists. Web apps and PDFs stay behind; PDF is a normal slide type in TVpilot, so upload those under Media.

In the AbleSign CMS, open Account Settings, API Keys, create a key (it starts with ak_) and paste it into the plugin. An Amazon Signage Stick or Fire TV Stick that ran AbleSign can run TVpilot too: pair it once and your playlists are already waiting.
