Revel Digital alternative
with a free screen

Revel Digital is a cloud signage platform with a developer API on every plan, retail media and DOOH tools, and an ISO 27001 certification. Businesses that look for a Revel Digital alternative often want a free start, a Raspberry Pi as the player, or a bill that does not grow with every screen. This page compares TVpilot and Revel Digital honestly, including where Revel Digital is the better pick.

Free plan, no credit card required. Paid plans from €5 a month.

The short answer

Revel Digital has no free plan: it offers a free trial with all features and no credit card, then charges $9 per screen per month on Basic, $24 on Pro and $39 on Enterprise. It runs on Android, Windows, Linux, BrightSign and Amazon Fire TV, includes a REST API on Basic and adds proof of play, analytics and DOOH tools on higher plans. TVpilot is free for 1 screen and charges per plan: €5 a month for 3 screens, €2 per extra screen, and runs on a Raspberry Pi. Revel Digital fits developers and retail media networks; TVpilot fits a business that wants low cost and live plugins.

What really differs

Price and the free start

Revel Digital starts with a free trial that unlocks all features without a credit card. After that, Basic is $9 per screen per month, Pro $24 and Enterprise $39, so 10 screens on Basic come to $90 a month.

TVpilot is free for 1 screen, forever. Starter is €5 a month with 3 screens included and €2 per extra screen, so 10 screens cost €19 a month; Pro is €29 a month with 10 screens and every Premium feature. You can pay monthly or yearly with 2 months free.

Developers and retail media

Revel Digital puts a full REST API on its Basic plan, which is rare at that price, and builds towards retail media: it calls itself DOOH retail media network ready, with AdHawk analytics and analytical AI on higher plans, QR and short code campaigns on Pro and proof of play on Enterprise.

TVpilot's Data API (Premium) lets any system that can send a web request put live figures, lists, order boards or menus on screens within seconds. For advertising on your own screens, TVpilot has proof-of-play certificates and advertiser reports per rented playlist, but no ad network or audience analytics.

Players

Revel Digital lists Android, Windows, Linux, BrightSign and Amazon Fire TV as players. The Raspberry Pi is not on its list.

TVpilot runs on the Amazon Signage Stick, any Raspberry Pi with one install command (kiosk mode, a watchdog that restarts the player within about 10 seconds and HDMI-CEC TV power scheduling), a Fire TV Stick with the TVpilot app, Android TV and Chromecast with Google TV through a browser, and any smart TV or computer that opens a player URL.

Everyday content

TVpilot's strength is what a small business puts on screen without a developer: a Designer, AI Studio, Canva, Google Slides and PowerPoint links, YouTube, and live plugins for weather, news, Google and Trustpilot reviews, calendars, Power BI, Shopify, bol.com, Mollie and SumUp, NS departures and ANWB traffic. Per-slide schedules with expiry dates, a calendar per screen and video walls up to 4×4 complete the set.

Honest advice

Which one should you pick?

Choose Revel Digital if

  • You build your own integrations and want a full REST API on the entry plan.
  • You run a retail media or DOOH network and need its ad and analytics tools.
  • You use BrightSign or Windows players.
  • You need an ISO 27001 certified platform.

Choose TVpilot if

  • You want a free screen instead of a trial.
  • You want 10 screens for €19 a month rather than $90.
  • You want to use a Raspberry Pi, with the TV switched on and off over HDMI-CEC.
  • You want ready-made live plugins rather than building integrations.

Moving from Revel Digital to TVpilot

Revel Digital's public API hands out the original files and playlists with their order and durations, so an automatic import is possible, and it is coming to the Switch to TVpilot plugin. It is not built yet. For now, download your files in Revel Digital and upload them in TVpilot under Media, many at once or straight from Google Drive or Dropbox.

Then build your playlists, set durations and schedules, and pair each screen once with its claim code. An Amazon Fire TV device that ran Revel Digital can run the TVpilot app from the Amazon Appstore.
